A freshly cut lawn goes a long way in giving your property a neat, well-manicured look, but it takes a lot of work to keep it that way. If you’re tired of spending hours a week pushing a gas-powered lawn mower, consider investing in an automated lawn mower like the Greenworks Pro Optimow 50H ($1599.99). As with most robotic lawn mowers, the Optimow 50H goes out every day, mows the lawn, and returns to its base station to charge it up for the next run. It did an excellent job of mowing in our tests and was very quiet, offering cellular connectivity, a thoughtfully designed app, and GPS tracking. However, it lacks the onboard controls and Wi-Fi connectivity you get with our Editors’ Choice winner, the Worx Landroid M 20V Cordless Robotic Lawn Mower (WR140).
Lawn Mower with Cellular Radio
Designed for lawns of up to half an acre, the Optimow 50H measures 12.2 x 20.0 x 25.0 inches (HWD), weighs 26.4 pounds, and has an IPX5 water resistance rating which means you can spray it with a hose. It is lime green and matte black and uses two 9-inch rear wheels and two 3.5-inch front swivel wheels to cut through the grass up to 35 percent. It has a handle above the front fender, and as with every robotic mower we tested, the bumper has sensors that cause the mower to stop and change direction if it encounters something in the road.
The panel on top of the mower has a cutting height dial, start and stop levers and four status LEDs, but that’s all you get in the way of the plane controls. The power on light lights solid green when the mower is on (kneel, charge, stand, pause), when the mower is turned off, if the safety switch has been removed, or the mower goes dark while waiting for pin number. The internet connection LED lights up blue when the mower is trying to go online, solid blue when connected, and dark when the mower is turned off. The protection indicator flashes yellow when a PIN code is required, the error LED flashes when the mower is turned off due to a wire failure or when the mower is raised, and flashes red. All other software and settings are handled by the Greenworks Tools mobile app for Android and iOS. By comparison, the Worx Landroid M 20V has an LCD screen and plenty of built-in controls that let you schedule tasks, check battery life, define work areas, and adjust rainfall delay settings. Setup is allowed on the lawn mower itself.
The Optimow brushless motor has a noise rating of 60dB and is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 150 minutes of cutting time and takes about 70 minutes to fully charge. It uses a rotating disc with three pivoting blades to mow the lawn, the cutting width is 8.7 inches and the adjustable cutting height is from 2.4 to 4.0 inches. You don’t get Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity with this mower as you do with the Ayi DRM3-600I, but it does have a GPS and cellular radio to track the mower’s location. Allowing you to control the mower using a mobile app. . You get two years of free cellular service with 50H, but once the free plan expires, you’ll need to shell out $29.99 for a two-year plan to connect to the app.
The well-designed mobile application makes it easy to create work schedules, check the current status of the mower, and start and stop mowing cycles. It opens to a screen that displays the mower name and shows you the current battery level and operating status (leave, mow, stop, return to base). Press the Park button to return the mower to base and press the Resume button to have the mower resume its work schedule.
The Settings & Placements button opens a screen where you can manually schedule the job so that the mower comes out at a specific time on specific days of the week. Or you can use the scheduling wizard to create a schedule based on the size of your garden. Simply use the sliders to tell the wizard the size of your garden, choose the day or night of your preferred working times, and the wizard will automatically create a schedule based on your input.
Press the position button at the bottom of the screen to see where and where the harvest is located on the satellite map. The Settings button opens a screen where you can change the mower name, create a PIN that is used to restart the mower if it has been lifted, and set the rain guard. Enables a feature that tracks the latest precipitation readings from your area and may be delayed. Duty cycle for proper drainage if necessary. There is also a frost setting that monitors the current temperature and will delay the duty cycle if there is a risk of frost. Other settings allow you to enable push notifications, create custom hotspots for large lawns, and enable a power saving mode that essentially turns off the cellular radio and mower after a full charge. In this mode you have to pull the mower from the charging station and push it again to restart everything.
Preparation and Use of Optimow 50H
Turning the Optimow 50H on the first time isn’t difficult, but plan to spend an hour or more laying wires in the yard and hammering in plastic nails to hold the wire in place. I actually installed the perimeter wire prior to the previous revision and it took a few hours (my garden is 1950 sq ft). Alternatively, you can hire a professional to do the wiring for you.
After connecting the surrounding wire and AC power plug to the base station, I Installed the app and created an account. I clicked add device, selected the motorized drive, and was told that the motor needed to be charged for at least 2 hours before continuing for the firmware updates to occur. After charging the Optimow, I clicked the double button and instantly detected the mower and added it to the app. I gave it a name and the installation was completed.
The Optimow 50H did a great job of keeping my entire lawn even. He was very calm, never once strayed from his surroundings, and sailed the cliffs and troughs in my lawn without any problem. The sensors did their job, stopping the mower when it encountered lawn obstacles, tennis balls, large fallen branches, and the rain guard feature worked well after a heavy rain.
I used the scheduling wizard to create a nighttime work routine and followed by the 50’s. The mower responded quickly to start and stop commands using the app, and the GPS radio did an excellent job of tracking his whereabouts.
Take Back the Weekend
With the Greeworks Optimow 50H robotic lawn mower, you can get perfectly manicured lawn without breaking a sweat. Installing the parameter cord takes some work, but once everything is set, you can sit back and let the mower handle it. Optimow performed great in our tests, and its mobile app makes it easy to create custom schedules day or night. However, you will eventually have to pay for a cellular plan to continue using the app since the mower doesn’t offer Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity. For a few hundred dollars less, our Editors’ Choice award winner for robotic lawn mowers, the Worx Landroid M 20V, uses Wi-Fi to allow you to control it from anywhere and offers plenty of onboard controls. If you want the ultimate in robotic lawn care or if you have a large yard with lots of hills and lots of terrain, meanwhile, the Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD comes with all-wheel drive, cellular connectivity, Bluetooth, and Alexa and Google voice commands. Provides support for and works with the small IFTTT. However, at $5199.99, it’s easily the most expensive model we’ve tested.
