Wyze is known for its affordable security cameras, and Wyze Plug Outdoor adds to its impressive stable of smart home devices. At just $11.99, it’s not only the least expensive third-party component we’ve tested, it’s also one of the most versatile. The dual-port Wyze Plug is easy to install outdoors, can be controlled by Alexa and Google voice commands, and works with other Wyze products and many external devices via IFTTT apps. Design-Wyze Exterior Components and Features
Wyze Plug Outdoor is a black dual-outlet plug with an IP64 weatherproof rating against rain and dust. It measures 3.9 x 2.8 x 1.3 inches (HWD) and has a 4-inch power cord with a 3-prong plug on top and two 3-hole outlets on the bottom that are protected by rubber caps.
Under the hood are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios. The front of the plug has two backlit on/off buttons (one for the access port) and a solid blue Wi-Fi status LED when the plug is plugged in and working properly. It blinks blue slowly, blinks when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Fast blue when in pairing mode. Here you will also find an ambient light sensor that you can program to turn the plug on and off depending on available daylight.
The Wyze Plug Outdoor works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, and will communicate with a number of third-party smart devices via IFTTT applets, but it doesn’t support Apple’s HomeKit system. It will interact with other smart devices, including cameras, home monitoring sensors, and smart light bulbs, and tell you how much energy (in kilowatt-hours) you’re using with daily, weekly, and monthly usage reports. Wyze Plug Outdoor uses the same mobile app for Android and iOS as all other Wyze devices. It opens on the home screen with panels for all your installed devices. Each port has its own panel and can be controlled independently of the other.
Press the outlet panel to unlock the monitor with a large on/off button that is light blue when the port is on and gray when it’s off. At the bottom of the screen are the timer, vacation mode, and usage buttons. The timer button lets you set a countdown timer to turn the port on or off, and the vacation mode button will turn the port on and off at random times to make it feel like home. Tap the Usage button to view daily, weekly and monthly energy usage charts.
In the top-right corner of each port screen, there’s a gear icon that takes you to the Settings screen where you can change the port name, set usage reminders that tell you when a certain power limit is reached, and can create on/off schedules. . Here you can also configure the ambient light sensor and make socket bases to work with other Wyze devices such as cameras and light bulbs.
Installation and Use of Wyze Plug Outdoor
As with all Wyze appliances, installing the Wyze Plug Outdoor is quick and easy. Once you Install the phone app and create an account, simply plug the device into the GFCI port and wait a second or two for the Wi-Fi indicator to flash blue.
Tap the plus button in the top left corner of the app’s home screen, tap Add Device and select Wyze Plug Outdoor from the Power & Lighting menu. Click Next, select your Wi-Fi SSID, enter your Wi-Fi password, and wait a few seconds for the Plug to connect to your network. At this point, it will also be added to the list of Alexa/Google devices. Give each port a name to complete the installation.
The plug worked flawlessly in the test. Quickly responds to application commands to turn each port on and off, matching its power reports to Kill-A-Watt meter readings.
I had no trouble turning each outlet on and off using Alexa voice commands, and the plug stuck to my schedule without a problem. The ambient light feature worked perfectly, as my rule was to plug in the WyzeCam V3 when motion was detected.
